dunnhumby moves to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure as a first step in their overall strategy to migrate to the cloud.

dunnhumby is the global leader in Customer Data Science, empowering businesses everywhere to compete and thrive in the modern data-driven economy. Their mission: to enable businesses to grow and reimagine themselves by becoming advocates and champions for their customers. With deep heritage and expertise in retail — one of the world's most competitive markets, with a deluge of multi-dimensional data — dunnhumby today enables businesses all over the world, across industries, to be Customer First.

The dunnhumby Customer Science Platform is their unique mix of technology, software and consulting enabling businesses to increase revenue and profits by delivering exceptional experiences for their customers. dunnhumby employs over 2,000 experts in offices throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas working for transformative, iconic brands such as Tesco, Coca-Cola, Meijer, Procter & Gamble, Raley's, L'Oreal and Monoprix.

dunnhumby set out to implement several new solutions and services to support their overall goal of migration to the cloud. Qubix experts were engaged for one of the first projects on this journey. The project was set around two main topics:

  • Solve Short-Term Issues with Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) Set-up and Migrate to Oracle Cloud Marketplace
  • Deliver closed-loop automation between Oracle HR Cloud and Greenhouse Applicant tracking system & recruiting software (ATS)

We have built the solution on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). dunnhumby’s development and production services (environments) are located in their on-premise environment, and the OCI services communicate with these environments via a secure IPSec Tunnel.

We have additionally set up 2 environments (DEV and PROD) in the OCI, each of them consisting of:

  • ODI Marketplace,
  • Block Storage,
  • Autonomous Datawarehouse.

In parallel to the ODI migration, dunnhumby was implementing  Greenhouse, their new Applicant tracking system & recruiting software (ATS) application. One of the project’s requirements was the integration of the recruitment process between Oracle Fusion Cloud Human Capital Management (HCM) and Greenhouse, which was accomplished using the REST API that is supported in ODI Marketplace and both applications.

Challenges

  • Fairly new product stack used (at the time)
  • ODI Marketplace was just recently released and had some severe bugs
  • Very few existing proof points on how well ODI can be migrated to the cloud
  • Potential issues with performance as data sources were still kept in the original on-prem systems
  • Relatively unknown integration between Oracle Fusion HCM and Greenhouse

Solution

  • Provisioning of required Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) services
  • Virtual network setup and merge into the dunnhumby information system
  • Migration of ODI 11g packages to ODI Marketplace
  • Oracle Fusion HCM and Greenhouse integration

Results

  • On-premise ODI 11g based ETL (Extract-Transform-Load) tools migrated to the latest Oracle Cloud Infrastructure based ODI Marketplace
  • Successful Proof of concept (PoC)  for the integration between Oracle Fusion HCM and Greenhouse
